Sheep, cattle & economic development

No, this blog will not evaluate the role of agriculture in economic development. Rather, it will be a reflection on something that my father said to me this weekend.

He was rambling about Paul Martin and his ‘dithering’ when he made an interesting comment. He said that you lead sheep but you herd cattle.

Now, my dad is a third generation Tory in the traditional sense of that word. So, we often get into animated debates about the role of government in society. In this case, I believe he was objecting to same sex marriage or the gun registry or some such issue.

But my mind wandered to the more abstract implications of his statement particularly as it relates to the government and their leadership, or lack thereof, regarding the economic development of this province.

If you lead sheep and herd cattle, what’s going on in New Brunswick?
