The Conference Board says that the high Canadian dollar (specifically currency fluctuations) will have more impact on SMEs than global corporations. I think that is true in the short term but a high Canadian dollar will have detrimental effects on foreign investment here over the long haul. Global companies made investment decisions back in the 1970s and 1980s at a 0.6/0.7 dollar level and now those projects are up for re-investment (take the Siemens plant in Hamilton that is moving to North Carolina) and the companies are thinking about .98 cent dollars.
It’s a big difference.
